Shillong, Feb 4: A media delegation from Karnataka visited the Umden Diwon Silk Village in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district, known for its traditional Eri Silk production.
The village, which has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its unique silk, showcased its environmentally sustainable and ethically produced textiles to the delegation.
“We gained insights into the entire silk production process, from silkworm rearing to handloom weaving,” said the delegation, appreciating the artisans’ dedication.
The visit highlighted the role of women-led Self Help Groups in preserving traditional weaving techniques and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier praised Meghalaya’s Eri Silk production, led by women, as a model of sustainability and cultural preservation.
