Guwahati, Nov 20: Former India cricket captain and legendary spinner Anil Kumble has joined the growing list of global icons captivated by the wildlife splendour of Kaziranga National Park. On a two-day visit to Assam, Kumble toured the famed Bagori range on Wednesday — an experience he described as “mesmerising, refreshing and unforgettable.”
Kumble, who was accompanied by his wife, was all praise for the park’s biodiversity and conservation efforts. “Kaziranga is truly adorable. I’m mesmerised,” he said after completing his jeep safari. The former India skipper spotted hoolock gibbons, the park’s iconic one-horned rhinos, and a variety of bird species during the visit.
He also lauded the “serene ambience” of the park and singled out the presence of women forest guards as a standout feature, calling Kaziranga’s management “truly impressive.”
Urging wildlife enthusiasts to experience Kaziranga firsthand, Kumble said, “India’s beauty lies everywhere. Come to Kaziranga and enjoy the thrill of witnessing wildlife from close.” He also noted that Sachin Tendulkar had recently visited the park, highlighting the growing attraction of Kaziranga among national icons.

Kumble, who has fond memories of playing in Assam earlier in his career, said he was eager to revisit the venues he once competed at to see how they have evolved. He praised local cricketers, congratulating wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry and expressing high hopes for young star Riyan Parag. “Riyan has already played two matches for India. You’ll see him in the IPL as well. He is performing very well in domestic cricket. With talent, the opportunity to play for India will surely come.”
During his visit, Kumble also explored the eco-shop and traditional handloom stalls at the Bagori entrance, appreciating the local craftsmanship on display.
