Shillong, April 4: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) observed the annual National Awakening Movement day on Thursday in a program at Mawlai Nongpdeng, Shillong.
Every year, the KSU observes April 4 as the day to “awaken” the Khasi-Jaintia communities to fight for free, secure, clean, and peaceful co-existence between the sons of the soil, and more so, towards a sense of belonging and ownership of the land.
However, this year, the State government denied permission for the KSU to organize the annual event due to the Model Code of Conduct of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections being in place.
Initially, the KSU had planned to observe this year’s Awakening Day in Khliehriat, East Jaiñtia Hills, in a grand ceremony.
Speaking at a program in Mawlai, KSU General Secretary Donald V Thabah said that if the KSU had really wanted to go ahead with the arrangement for the program in Khliehriat, it would have, but it respects the arrangements made with the administration.
However, Thabah added that next year, the program will be even grander, and no one should deny permission.
