Lahkmen Rymbui tenders his resignation as Home Minister

Shillong, Aug 15: Meghalaya Home Minister Lakhmen Ryumbui has offered his resignation in the face of widespread lawlessness in some parts of Shillong over the killing of a surrendered Former HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkiew who was shot dead by police at his home during a raid that left many unanswered questions.

The home minister and his party- the UDP which has been badly mauled by the incident has reportedly decided to resign as tempers across the city continue to flare.

Sources said that Home Minister has arrived at the official residence of the chief minister and when word last came in, they were huddled in a meeting.

The killing of the former militant leader sparked violence including a mob attack on a police vehicle that was taken over after its occupants fled leaving behind sophisticated AK rifle.

In a chaotic scene literally imitating Afghanistan where law and order has broken collapsed, the mob drove through streets in the hijacked police scorpio brandishing the automatic weapon before setting the vehicle on fire.

The killing of the surrendered militant during a pre-dawn raid led to allegations of police high handedness and fake encounter claims by citizens.

On Sunday, as the state was celebrating the nation’s Independence Day, sporadic cases of lawlessness began emerging as groups of people began stone pelting and arson attacks on vehicles passing through Mawlai and Jaiaw localities of Shillong city.

Police had claimed to have found a pistol during the raid on Thangkhiew’s residence and stated that they opened fire after he attacked them with a knife.
