Guwahati, July 3: Lakhimpur district administration in Assam conducted an eviction drive on Thursday, removing around 220 families who had allegedly encroached on government land.

“We had issued notices to the families on June 29, asking them to produce supporting documents for the land they occupied. However, they failed to present any valid papers. Accordingly, we proceeded with the eviction,” said Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Pronab Jit Kakoty.

He added that the drive would cover approximately 235 bighas of land, which had been occupied by 218 families.

The eviction operation was carried out at Debera Doloni, Siringsuk, Dhakuakhonia, and Raang Chali, with the support of 400 security personnel, 21 bulldozers, and excavators.

Of the evicted families, 25 belonged to indigenous communities, while the remaining were Bengali-speaking Muslims. The government has stated that it plans to rehabilitate the indigenous families by allotting them land at alternative locations.

Notably, Dhakuakhonia, one of the eviction sites, had recently drawn public attention after three suspected cow skulls were discovered near a local Namghar (prayer house) on June 18, an incident that led to the arrest of seven individuals.
