Omicron spread in Garo Hills forces administration to get touch with violators

Tura, Jan 20: Huge rise in number of covid cases and the detection of a large number of the new and fast spreading Omicron variant in Tura and other parts of West Garo Hills has led district administration to issue orders that make anyone visiting markets with symptoms and not wearing masks to be tested for covid.

The spread of Omicron has become a serious health issue after 15 samples sent for genome sequencing came out positive with the new variant, yesterday.

The order by Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh on Wednesday directs that anyone visiting market places and showing symptoms of cough, cold, fever will have to get tested at the covid testing centre set up in the Tura market area. The testing centre will also provide testing for voluntary citizens, as well.

Anyone not wearing face masks and found by magistrates will also have to go for covid testing.

Students without masks will have to write a 2000 word essay on the importance of wearing face masks in public places otherwise their parents will have to pay a fine of Rs 1000 to the market committee.

Shopkeepers have been directed to wear facemasks, provide masks for customers who don’t have and not to provide service to anyone who does not wear a facemask.

Vehicles entering the district will now require to obtain a format from the District Disaster Management Office in the DC office, the order mentions.

124 fresh positive cases in just 2 days
The number of new positive cases has touched 124 in just two days in the district.

While 54 were detected on Tuesday, another 70 positive cases were found today.

The positivity rate is dangerously rising from yesterday’s 11.71% to 15.76%, a hike of five percent.
