Shillong, May 28: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya will begin a three-day visit to Meghalaya on May 29, with a packed schedule focused on sports infrastructure, youth affairs and preparations for the 39th National Games 2027.
A key highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of the ₹132.9-crore Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex in Shillong on May 30 alongside Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The facility is being positioned as a major sports hub for the Northeast and a key venue for the upcoming National Games.
The modern indoor complex has been designed to host multiple disciplines, including basketball, badminton and volleyball, besides other indoor sporting events. The project also includes supporting infrastructure such as multipurpose halls, an auditorium and banquet facilities.
During the visit, the Host State Contract for the 39th National Games 2027 will also be signed in the presence of senior officials and representatives of the Indian Olympic Association, formally advancing Meghalaya’s preparations for hosting the multi-sport event.
Mandaviya is also scheduled to chair a high-level review meeting on the National Games preparations, with officials from Meghalaya and other Northeastern states expected to participate in discussions on infrastructure readiness and coordination.
The Union Minister will additionally inspect the Umsawli Sports Complex, including the aquatics and tennis facilities, to assess the progress of ongoing sports infrastructure projects in the state.
Apart from sports-related engagements, Mandaviya will attend a Chintan Shivir organised by the Department of Youth Affairs and review the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes in Ri-Bhoi district under the Poorvottar Sampark Setu initiative on May 31.
Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and senior government officials are expected to accompany the Union Minister during the visit.
Officials said the visit reflects the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening sports infrastructure, youth engagement and regional development in the Northeast ahead of the National Games.
