Imphal, Apr 7: At least three people were killed and several others injured after Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire to disperse a protest at Tronglaobi in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday.
According to reports, the incident took place at Tronglaobi Maning in the Gelmon area, where a large number of locals had gathered outside a CRPF camp.
“The crowd gathered at CRPF camp and staged a protest following a suspected attack by Kuki militants in which two minors siblings were killed and their mother critically injured. To disperse the agitated protesters the CRPF personnel opened fire on them,” said an police official.
The agitated crowd accused security forces of sheltering armed groups and attempted to storm the camp. The situation soon escalated, with reports of damage to barracks and vehicles inside the premises.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in private vehicles and ambulances, with some of the critically injured referred to Imphal for advanced treatment.
The exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed.
Tension remained high in the area at the time of filing this report, with more people continuing to gather nearby.
