Shillong, Mar 10: As the Election Commission of India (ECI) updates the vote counts, the BJP in Manipur was set to sweep the elections to form the new government on its own as it had secured wins in 25 seats and was leading in 7 more seats, taking its cumulative total to 32 seats in the house of 60.

Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] has emerged as the true dark horse by winning 6 seats and opened its account for the first time in its existence in Manipur since 2003.

Conrad Sangma-led NPP, earlier touted as the dark horse, had secured 6 seats so far and was leading in another 2 constituencies, which could take its total tally to 8, making it the second biggest party in the state.

Indian National Congress, on the other hand, has secured just 4 seats, an abysmal performance in comparison to the 28 seats it won in 2017 Assembly elections.

Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) registered wins from 2 seats while Naga Peoples Front (NPF) had won 5 seats.

2 Independent candidates have also won and another one seat was being led by another Independent candidate.

Mentionably, in the 2017 Assembly elections, the BJP had secured 21 seats, Congress – 28, NPP – 4, NPF – 4, and AITC – 1, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) – 1, and Independent – 1.
