Must read

Imphal, Aug 8: Manipur’s newly appointed Chief Secretary, Puneet Kumar Goel, on Thursday visited relief camps in Kangpokpi district to assess conditions on the ground and review the state’s rehabilitation efforts for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The visit marks the Chief Secretary’s first public engagement in Kangpokpi since assuming office, reflecting a renewed administrative focus on rehabilitation and reconciliation in Manipur’s vulnerable hill districts.

Accompanied by Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary (Agriculture), Goel conducted inspections at the Ngahmun Pre-Fabricated Relief Camp in Champhai Sub-Division and the Mandop Relief Camp in Kangpokpi Sub-Division. The senior officials interacted directly with camp residents — including students, elderly citizens, and families — to understand their living conditions and concerns.

“The Government of Manipur is committed to a peaceful and safe rehabilitation process. Security forces are working round-the-clock to create a conducive environment for the return of displaced persons,” Goel said during the visit.

The visit also included strategic meetings with district officials and civil society representatives, signaling the administration’s intent to strengthen grassroots engagement and ensure inclusive governance in the conflict-affected district.

In a significant development during Goel’s visit to the Kangpokpi District Headquarters, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) submitted a memorandum highlighting the urgent needs and challenges faced by the Kuki-Zo tribal community. Signed by CoTU Chairman Thanglen Kipgen, the memorandum underscores rising concerns over continued unrest, displacement, and lack of basic services in tribal areas.

Goel assured civil society organizations of the government’s continued support and collaborative approach in addressing the humanitarian and security concerns of all affected communities.
