Manipur ethnic-violence: Internet suspension derails postal services, employees begin manual processing

Imphal, Aug 26: The ethnic-violence in Manipur has severely hit postal services in the State, resulting in citizens not getting their parcels on time. The post offices are unable to dispatch the parcels on time due to lack of internet in their offices.

Many of them are waiting for ATM cards, job application etc due to the shut down of postal department in Imphal. At least 700-800 bags full of parcels are lying at the Imphal Post Office.

“From August 23, we have started working manually (processing) because we have no internet services. The postal department was badly affected due to the ethnic violence and for last four months it was closed down. We have started working and now doing it manually. We have received many mail bags and started dispatching them to the concerned address,” said an official of the Postal Department in Imphal.

He informed that the digital transactions have been badly affected. Although the BSNL has active a line for them, one of the IP addresses is not functioning till date, which has handicapped the department.

“We have to address the public grievances. We have received the parcels and after receiving it we have started our work manually,” he said.

One of the students who came to collect her parcel said, “I’ve came to post office after getting message. My books have arrived and I have received by parcels. I am very happy to receive by parcels.”

The Passport Seva Kendra in Imphal has been defunct since May 4, 2023.

At least 150 people have been killed and over 400 wounded in the violence that began on May 3, 2023. More than 60,000 have been forced from their homes as the army, parliamentary forces and police struggle to quell violence.
