Imphal, May 20: Naga women’s groups on Wednesday staged protests across several Naga-inhabited districts of Manipur, demanding the safe release of six Naga men who remain in captivity following a deadly ambush in Kangpokpi district.
A sit-in demonstration was organised at Tribal Market in New Checkon, Imphal East, by the Naga Women Union, while similar protests were reported from Senapati, Noney, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Churachandpur, Chandel and Tamenglong districts.
The protests were led by Naga women’s organisations, including the Tangkhul Shanao Long, which also demanded the resignation of Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, alleging that her husband’s organisation was involved in the abduction of the Naga men.
The abductions reportedly took place after an ambush at Kotlen in Kangpokpi district in which three Thadou church leaders were killed.
Sources said around 20 Naga individuals were abducted following the incident. While 14 have since been released, six are still missing.
Protesters carried placards reading “Human lives, not hostages”, “Bring our people home alive”, “Bring back six hostages safe” and “Don’t test our patience”.
A large number of women participated in the demonstrations, expressing anger over the continued captivity of the six men nearly a week after the incident.
“The Naga men were picked up from a Kuki area by Kuki people. Why can’t the security forces directly interrogate residents of Leilon Vaiphei village as part of efforts to secure their release?” a protester said.
