Imphal, Sept 1: In a major crackdown on insurgent activities in Manipur, security forces arrested two members of the proscribed group Arambai Tenggol and three militants of the banned People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) in the past 24 hours, seizing a huge cache of arms and ammunition.

The two Arambai Tenggol members were picked up from Imphal West district. Identified as Laishram Tondomba Singh (27) and Tourangbam Amarjit Meitei (20), alias Yaima, both hail from Thoubal district. According to police, they were involved in trafficking illegal weapons and other activities prejudicial to public order.

From their possession, police recovered seven HK33 rifles, two M4A1 carbine guns, two Glock .45 auto pistols, and a large quantity of assorted ammunition.

The arrests come months after Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appealed to insurgents to surrender looted and illegally held weapons. In February, Arambai Tenggol members had deposited 246 sophisticated weapons at the First Manipur Rifle Campus in Imphal.

Meanwhile, three hardcore PREPAK militants were arrested in separate operations in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Security forces also recovered Aadhaar cards, incriminating documents, and a significant quantity of ammunition, including three high-powered grenades and 53 rounds of different calibres.

Authorities said the operations are part of an intensified effort to curb insurgent activity and illegal arms circulation in the state.
