On December 20, 2023, a solemn ceremony took place at Tribal Martyr’s Park in Manipur, where the bodies of 87 members of the Kuki community were laid to rest.

Altogether, 41 bodies have been airlifted from Imphal and 46 bodies from the Churachandpur hospital morgue.

The violence was initially sparked by a dispute over affirmative action measures, specifically the demand by the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status, which led to peaceful protests by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur.

“We have separated from the valley people. We are tribals and hill people, and we need separate administration for us. My brother had paid the price. So, I urged the government to initiate a mechanism for separate administration for the Kuki-Zo community,” said a lady from the Kuki-Zo community, whose brother was killed in the ethnic violence in Manipur.

The Kuki-Zo community, which makes up 30 percent of Manipur’s population, has been forced to pay final tributes to their members who fell victim to this ethnic rift.

The community’s main stronghold in Churachandpur, along with other districts like Chandel, Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, and Senapati, has been deeply affected by the violence.
