Mawhati MLA seeks PHC upgrade for Mawrong road sub centres

Must read

Shillong, June 12: Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar has urged the state government to upgrade two key sub-centres along the Mawrong Road in Ri Bhoi district to Primary Health Centres (PHCs), citing the pressing healthcare needs of over 12,000 residents across 13 villages.

Marngar, accompanied by members of the Sunjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri Bhoi unit, met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday and submitted a memorandum highlighting the demand.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Marngar said, “We are here today along with representatives from the Mawrong Road area to request the upgradation of our two sub-centres—Mawrong and Jamanar—to PHCs. These facilities are crucial for the local population who currently face immense difficulties accessing timely medical care.”

He pointed out that the nearest Community Health Centre (CHC) is located in Umsning, approximately 17 kilometres from Mawrong village, making access to essential healthcare services challenging, particularly for pregnant women and the elderly.

“Our people, especially expectant mothers, are struggling to reach Umsning CHC for deliveries and regular check-ups. This distance poses a serious problem in times of emergency,” Marngar said.

The MLA said he was encouraged by the Deputy Chief Minister’s response. “I am happy that we received a positive assurance from Deputy CM Tynsong. We hope the government will take swift action to upgrade the sub-centres.”

Marngar also confirmed that land for the proposed PHC has already been secured. “The Dorbar Shnong of Mawrong has agreed to donate the land free of cost for this initiative,” he stated.

He added that both sub-centres cater to a substantial population—over 5,000 in Jamanar and more than 6,000 in Mawrong, making the total beneficiary population over 12,000.

“We believe that upgrading these centres will greatly improve access to basic and emergency healthcare for the entire Mawrong Road area,” Marngar said.
