Shillong, Aug 9: Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will introduce biannual board examinations starting in 2025. This new approach aims to provide students who do not pass the board exams with an opportunity to retake them within one to two months.

The decision, which amends the Meghalaya Board of School Education Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination (2011), was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday.

“Beginning in 2025, MBOSE will hold two board exams each year,” announced Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma during a press briefing after the meeting. “The first exam will take place in February or early March, and the second will allow students who fail in all or a few subjects to retake the exam within one to two months, likely in May.”

This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and is designed to support students by reducing the time lost between attempts. Previously, students had to wait a year to retake their exams, but now they can do so within the same academic year.

Minister Rakkam also mentioned that from the 2025-2026 academic year onwards, the first board exam might be held in December, with the second exam in February or March 2026. However, for the 2025 academic year, the two exams will take place between February and May.

Additionally, starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, students will no longer have the option to choose an optional paper or benefit from a “best of five” policy. All students will be required to pass all six subjects in the board examination.
