SHILLONG, Oct 15: The management of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has called the MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MePWU) for a meeting on October 17 to discuss the demands of the union.

This was informed by MePWU president Mantiphrang Lyngdoh Kiri through a statement issued on Friday.

He said the MePWU which is representing the contractual/casual employees has been demanding from the management to frame a policy for regularization of long standing casual workers.

Due to the adamant attitude of the higher authority of the MeECL that refused to call the union for negotiation and meeting, the union was left with no other options but to resort to the first phase of agitational programmes on August 29,30 & 31 by wearing black badge in all offices and sit in demonstration (Dharna) from September 5 to 16 at MeECL, Lumjingshai, Shillong.

The MePWU had staged its second phase of agitational programme by organizing lunch break dharnas from October 10 to 14. He said this will be followed by a mass casual leave on October 17, to enable the members to attend the rally at Lumjingshai.

The procession to the Secretariat will be decided after the meeting with the management, Kiri said.
