Shillong, April 15: Jinysha D. Maiong, a women’s leader and academician from Meghalaya, has expressed her support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, calling it an important step towards ensuring greater representation of women in legislative bodies.
In a statement, Maiong said the Bill would help strengthen women’s participation in decision making and promote a more inclusive democratic system.
“The Women’s Reservation Bill is a historic step towards ensuring equal representation and empowerment of women in our legislative bodies. It is high time we move beyond tokenism and give women their rightful share in decision making,” she said.
She also appealed to Members of Parliament to support the Bill regardless of political differences.
“I appeal to all Members of Parliament, across party lines, to rise above politics and support this Bill for a stronger and more inclusive democracy in India,” she said, adding that the country’s diverse communities must have equal opportunities and representation.
Maiong also welcomed the proposed increase in seats in Parliament, noting that it would strengthen representation and help address issues more effectively at different levels of governance. She added that seats in state legislative assemblies are also expected to increase in the future.
She further said that women’s political representation is not only about gender justice but also about bringing different perspectives into governance and policymaking.
According to her, greater participation of women in politics can help address issues related to health, education, livelihood and social security more effectively.
Maiong urged all political parties to set aside differences and ensure the smooth passage of the Bill in Parliament, stating that empowering women ultimately strengthens society as a whole.
