The two nuns, who work at Fatima Hospital in Agra, were detained by the Chhattisgarh police at Durg Railway Station on July 26 after being accused of attempting to take three girls for forced religious conversion. Sangma termed the charges “baseless” and said they reflected a “worrying pattern of religious targeting.”
“Religious persecution of any kind has no place in a democratic and secular nation like India. Such baseless accusations not only endanger the lives and freedoms of innocent individuals but also undermine the constitutional values we hold dear,” Sangma wrote in the letter.
He urged the Chhattisgarh CM to ensure a fair investigation, safeguard the rights of religious minorities, and consider withdrawing the case against the nuns.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India(CBCI) has also sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The body has alleged there is a growing pattern of harassment and vilification of minority communities.
It has accused the Chhattisgarh police of filing a false case against two nuns from Kerala under pressure from right-wing groups.
The body pointed to a growing trend where anti-social elements appear to be tracking the movements of Christian religious women, confronting them at public places like railway stations, provoking crowds, and using abusive and threatening language.
“Such incidents not only threaten the modesty of women but also put their lives in grave danger. These repeated, unwarranted actions are a serious violation of the Constitution and cannot be tolerated,” the statement read.
The association urged both the central and state governments to act decisively against those spreading communal hatred and targeting Christian workers.
