Reliance Fresh, Amazon Karigar, and Blue Tokai to scale the state’s agri-supply chain

Delhi, Aug 1: The third edition of the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival opened today at Dilli Haat, spotlighting the state’s agricultural success while striking three landmark deals to transform its farm-to-market supply chain.

Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the festival in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, praising the state’s value-chain approach and describing its pineapples as “the juiciest and sweetest I have ever tasted.”

In a major push for farmers, the Government of Meghalaya signed MoUs with Reliance Fresh, Amazon Karigar, and Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters to scale procurement, expand national visibility, and strengthen the distribution of the state’s agricultural produce.

“The products of Meghalaya are almost fully organic. Today, the air in Delhi feels filled with the fragrance of Meghalaya. I couldn’t stop eating the pineapples — they are truly special,” Chouhan said, assuring the Centre’s continued support to Meghalaya’s agri-sector.

The Union Agriculture Minister informed that he will soon visit Meghalaya again with a team of scientists. He said that when he visited the state during the ‘Vikasit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan’, the farmers had highlighted several problems and challenges related to agriculture. Farmers had demanded appropriate solutions for increasing the ‘shelf life’ of agricultural products. In this regard, necessary instructions have been given to the scientists of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Concrete measures will soon be available, and research is on.

The Union Minister said that processing of agricultural products is necessary, and serious attempts are being made for establishing relevant processing units. The state government has also moved a proposal of ‘air lifting’ of agricultural products, and it has been taken sincerely. The option of transporting these products via train will also be worked upon. Efforts will also be made to increase the production of pineapple per hectare. A requisite roadmap for the development of agriculture in Meghalaya will be prepared in collaboration with the state government.

He also appealed to the countrymen to make maximum use of Meghalaya’s products. “Our products are the best in the world. We shouldn’t hesitate in using them,” he observed.

The festival also witnessed the unveiling of Meghalaya’s latest agricultural achievements, aligned with the state’s Vision@2032 to become a $16 billion economy. The strategy includes expanding processing facilities, strengthening logistics, promoting crop diversification, and boosting farmer incomes through market-driven models.

Chief Minister Sangma highlighted that Meghalaya produces 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of pineapples annually, with growing export and domestic demand.

“Over the past few years, we have established multiple fruit processing units to meet international standards. With today’s MoUs, our farmers will gain crucial market access and better logistics support,” Sangma said.

Over the last three years, Meghalaya has added 27 cold storages, 8 processing hubs, and a network of refrigerated trucks, enabling both exports and a stronger domestic footprint. In 2024, the state exported 682 metric tonnes of processed pineapples to the EU, Gulf, and Southeast Asia, while 150 MT were sold in Indian metros through partnerships.

The three-day festival features curated stalls from farmer cooperatives, live tastings, value-added products, and B2B interactions. Cultural performances by musicians from the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project will take place at Dilli Haat and India Gate.

Organised by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, the Pineapple Festival has grown into a flagship event promoting natural farming and positioning the Northeast as a key player in India’s agri-economy.

The festival is open to the public at Dilli Haat, INA, from 11 AM to 8:45 PM daily until August 3.
