SHILLONG, FEB 6: Seven more bodies have been recovered on Friday taking the death toll in the East Jaintia Hills coal mine blast to 25.
The blast occurred at an illegal coal mine in Thangsku, Umsngat village, on Thursday, prompting a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force, Special Rescue Team, and National Disaster Response Force.
Director General of Police I Nongrang said 12 of the 25 bodies recovered so far have been identified.

“The operation is still underway, and all efforts are being made to recover any remaining victims and complete the identification process at the earliest,” she added.
Medical teams and ambulances have been deployed at the site, while the Army and Air Force remain on standby.
The district administration and State Disaster Management Authority are closely monitoring the situation.
