Shillong, Sept 1 : Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri has reiterated that Meghalaya is on track to host the National Games in 2027, despite ongoing work in certain infrastructure areas.
Acknowledging that there are “certain areas [that] require further improvement,” he described the preparations as an “ongoing process with steps already being taken wherever necessary.”
Warjri also spoke about the recent North East Sports Ministers’ meeting, where the idea of jointly sharing responsibilities across states was discussed. “The idea was to allocate specific disciplines to each state so that the responsibility of hosting and promoting those events could be shared across the region,” he explained. He clarified, however, that “a final decision on the allotment of disciplines is yet to be made as talks are still underway, and a detailed statement will only be provided once everything is finalized.”
On preparations within the state, the minister noted that the government has allowed sports associations to utilise funds to reach all districts and organise trials in their respective disciplines. He cited the Meghalaya Games, successfully conducted for two consecutive years, as an example of the state’s broader preparation strategy. “Several more initiatives are in the pipeline, aimed at strengthening disciplines that will feature in the national event,” he assured.
When asked if the government would focus resources on specific sports, Warjri maintained that “it would not be appropriate to single out any sport,” though he admitted that Meghalaya’s natural physique and strengths could give athletes an edge in some areas. “Identifying and working on these areas…is a lengthy process but one that the government is actively engaged in,” he added.
Looking ahead, Warjri expressed confidence that Meghalaya will deliver a successful edition of the National Games. “All preparations are in progress and…the state will be ready by the time the National Games arrive in 2027,” he said. He further remarked that the state’s hospitable culture would play a big role in ensuring a smooth experience for visiting athletes and officials. “The fact that the games are scheduled to be held in the state itself…serves as a form of awareness that has already spread among the people,” he noted.
