Shillong, June 16: Meghalaya’s Forest and Environment Department has launched a strategic planning exercise aimed at strengthening conservation efforts, tackling emerging environmental challenges and building a more resilient forest governance system in the state.
A series of strategic discussion workshops held in Shillong and Tura brought together officers and staff from across the department to identify priorities for the future of forest and environmental management.
Organised by the Forest and Environment Department in collaboration with the State Capability Enhancement Project (SCEP) and the Meghalaya Government Innovation Lab (GIL), the workshops were facilitated by Professor Aroon P. Manoharan of Suffolk University.

Participants deliberated on a wide range of pressing issues, including biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, human-wildlife conflict, forest encroachment, community participation, institutional strengthening and the use of technology in forest management.
Through group discussions, interactive exercises and visioning sessions, officials outlined strategic goals and actionable plans to improve conservation outcomes and enhance service delivery.
The exercise is expected to contribute to the development of a more responsive and future-ready Forest and Environment Department, with a renewed focus on safeguarding Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity and natural heritage amid growing environmental pressures.
