Must read

Shillong, May 6: The state Cabinet on Friday approved the Office Memorandum (OM) for the issuance of income and assets certificate for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the state.

This is for reservation of economically weaker sections in civil posts & services in Government of India offices and posts, and admission in Central government institutions, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

He also recalled that the issue was also raised in the Assembly that the OM has been issued by the Government of India but the state government had not issued the OM in reference to that.

Sangma informed the matter has been rectified and the OM was accordingly approved by the Cabinet on Friday.

He said the OM is applicable to persons who are not covered under the existing schemes of reservation for SC/ST and the socially and economically backward classes.

“Therefore, this does not apply to majority of the population of Meghalaya,” he added.

Quoting the guidelines as per the OM, the chief minister said the families whose income is less than Rs 8 lakh will be eligible for the EWS certificate. However, if these families, despite having income of less than Rs. 8 lakh, but having agricultural land measuring 5 acres or more, then they won’t be entitled for the certificate.

“Also, if they have residential flat of 1,000 sq feet, if they have residential plot of 1,000 sq yards and if they have residential plot of 200 sq yards in non-municipal areas, they will not be entitled,” added Sangma.
