Meghalaya plans tree growing competition to have more cherry blossom trees

Must read

Shillong, June 29: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has announced that the government is planning to organize a competition to encourage localities to grow the maximum number of cherry blossom trees.

The minister stated that the localities growing the maximum number of cherry blossom trees will be recognized and suitably rewarded.

Lyngdoh informed reporters that the Department of Tourism will tie up with the Forest Department for this initiative.

He expressed gratitude towards the Forest Department for their support, citing the return of Ward’s Lake to the Tourism Department and the allocation of nearly 300 acres of land for tourism projects.

Regarding the significance of the Cherry Blossom Festival, Lyngdoh highlighted its global acceptance, citing the exchange between the government of Meghalaya and Japan, as well as the visit of the Japanese Ambassador to the festival last year.

He also emphasized the positive impact of the festival on local tribal musicians, providing them with a platform and opportunities to earn a living.

This year, the Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled to be held on November 14 and 15, and the minister announced plans to make it a “walker experience”, allowing people to see cherry blossoms growing along the route from Ward’s Lake to Polo.
