Meghalaya positions itself as Northeast’s AI Leader; CM calls for time-bound roadmap at Regional AI Impact Conference

Shillong, Dec 3: Meghalaya has projected a bold vision for becoming the Northeast’s emerging hub for artificial intelligence and digital innovation at the Regional AI Impact Conference 2025 in Shillong with strong participation, major announcements, and high-level endorsements.

The conference, hosted by the state’s Information Technology & Communication Department in partnership with IndiaAI Mission and the Ministry of Electronics & IT, brought together more than 700 participants—including students, tech innovators, startups, researchers, and government officials.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who inaugurated the event, said technology has already transformed governance in Meghalaya by enabling “timely, informed decisions and targeted interventions,” and stressed that the state is now ready to leapfrog into the next phase of digital transformation.

“It gives me immense pride to see Meghalaya lead this Regional AI Impact Conference for the North East,” he said.
“For any sector to truly grow, it must be supported by a robust ecosystem—one built through collaboration among government, industry experts, academia, and all key stakeholders.”

Sangma said the state’s first government engineering college, recently established, reflects Meghalaya’s growing focus on developing advanced technical capabilities. While the institution may have opened late compared to other states, he said, emerging technologies provide an opportunity to accelerate progress.

“The beauty of technology is that it allows us to leapfrog, catch up and even lead,” he said. “We must invest in developing advanced skills, including AI, quantum computing and frontier technologies. Meghalaya has immense potential to spearhead the AI transformation in our region.”

Sangma chaired a high-level investor roundtable where discussions centred on unlocking investment in AI, enabling smart governance, and positioning Meghalaya as the digital innovation capital of the Northeast.

“Meghalaya’s robust, business-enabling ecosystem presents a compelling opportunity for leading companies in AI and emerging technologies to invest, collaborate and build the future with us,” Sangma said.

He called upon industry leaders and domain experts to produce a time-bound AI roadmap that can guide the state’s future investments and policies.

The full-day conference saw the launch of multiple AI initiatives, including: Bhashini Hackathon for Khasi and Garo languages, aimed at boosting local language technologies; MeghDEE, a programme to foster digital innovation through student–startup–government collaboration; and DRISHTI-NE hackathon, offering young innovators a chance to pitch AI solutions and win Rs 2.5 lakh.

A key highlight was the signing of two major MoUs between the Government of Meghalaya and the IndiaAI Mission to establish two new Data & AI Labs in Meghalaya, and another MoU with T-Hub and MATH to set up a Satellite Incubation Centre in Shillong, strengthening the state’s AI and startup ecosystem.

Officials said the twin Data and AI Labs will bolster applied research, digital governance tools, and capacity-building, while the incubation centre will serve as a launchpad for local startups.

The Shillong conference is one of five regional events leading up to the IndiaAI Impact Summit scheduled for February 2026. Organisers said the strong participation and multi-stakeholder collaboration reaffirmed Meghalaya’s growing stature within India’s digital transformation landscape.
