Meghalaya’s Nongjrong viewpoint to remain closed on Sundays from January 2026

Must read

Shillong, Dec 5: In a move to ease overcrowding and safeguard community wellbeing, the Dorbar Shnong Nongjrong has announced that the popular Nongjrong Viewpoint and other tourist spots in the area will remain closed to visitors every Sunday starting January 2026.

As per a public notice issued by the Dorbar, entry into the village will be restricted from Saturday night until the end of Sunday, and all homestays will also remain shut. The decision, it said, was taken collectively by the community.

The Dorbar outlined several reasons for the weekly closure, including the need for a dedicated day of rest for villagers and increasing challenges in managing the surge of Sunday visitors. It noted that essential facilities in the village remain limited on Sundays and that a weekly shutdown would help reduce disturbance and maintain peace.

Visitors planning overnight stays in Nongjrong have been advised to pre-book accommodation from Monday to Saturday. Homestay availability can be checked through listings on Google Maps, the notice said.

While expressing regret for any inconvenience the move may cause, the Dorbar stressed that the decision is crucial for ensuring better crowd management and protecting the interests of both residents and visitors.
