SHILLONG, FEB 25: Two suspected cases of meningococcal bacterial infection, resulting in one fatality, have been reported at the Assam Regiment Centre in Shillong over the past two weeks. The authorities have taken immediate precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the infection.
According to a public notice issued by Defence PRO Shillong, chemoprophylactic doses of antibiotic ciprofloxacin have been administered to all contacts as per medical protocols.
“As a precautionary measure, chemoprophylactic dose of antibiotic ciprofloxacin as per medical protocols has been given to all contacts,” the notice stated.
Additionally, masking and restricted movement protocols have been put in place to minimize the risk of transmission.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that there is no cause for alarm or panic.
“There is no cause for alarm or panic,” the notice added.
When contacted, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said, “Not sure. We have sent it for testing, we are waiting for the report.”
