Aizawl, Oct 26: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior leaders Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor would visit poll-bound Mizoram to campaign for party candidates in the state assembly.

The 40-member Mizoram assembly will go to the polls on November 7.

Talking to media persons, Mizoram Congress media cell chairman Lalremruata Renthlei said that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Shashi Tharoor are likely to visit the Mizo National Front (MNF)-ruled state to intensify the party campaign on November 3 and 4.

Vadra is likely to campaign in Mizoram’s southern and western regions where people belonging to the linguistic minority are inhabited.

Another Congress General Secretary and Rajya Sabha member, Jairam Ramesh, is expected to arrive in Aizawl on Thursday.

Ramesh, accompanied by Mizoram Congress in-charge Bhakta Charan Das and senior observer Sachin Rao, would brief the media on Friday and hold meetings with party leaders.

They would also address election meetings during their stay in Mizoram.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi campaigned for Congress candidates in Aizawl and south Mizoram’s Lunglei town during his visit to Mizoram on October 16 and 17.

The major political parties geared up for the assembly polls and started campaigns.

All 174 candidates, including 16 women, are in the fray for the polls.

Ruling MNF, main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and Congress have fielded candidates in all 40 seats.

The BJP, which contested 39 seats and won only one seat in the last assembly polls in 2018, this time fielded candidates in 23 seats, and the Aam Aadmi Party, in its electoral debut in Mizoram, has nominated four candidates in Aizawl district.

In Mizoram, over 80 per cent voters cast their votes in most of the elections, with 80.82 per cent of the total of 6,90,860 voters having exercised their franchise in the 2013 Assembly polls, while 80.03 per cent of the 7,74,757 voters cast their votes in the 2018 elections.

Election officials urged all people, especially the new voters to enjoy the festival, vote, and encourage their friends and families to do the same.
