Guwahati, Dec 7: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has informally communicated that an inquiry will be initiated into the allegations against Tezpur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, marking the first indication of central intervention in the months-long campus crisis.
The Joint Secretary, Department of Higher Education, conveyed the message through a handwritten note received by the student fraternity, stating that Prof. Singh would be divested of administrative powers and that a time-bound inquiry would follow.
However, student groups, along with faculty and non-teaching staff, have made it clear that they will continue their agitation until a formal, official notification is issued by the Ministry. They termed the communication a “preliminary acknowledgment” and insisted that only concrete, authoritative action would lead to the withdrawal of protests.

The standoff enters its 79th day with the university community maintaining complete non-cooperation. The Joint Director has also advised that the status quo be maintained regarding the appointment of Prof. Dhruba K. Bhattacharyya, who has assumed charge as Acting Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the University Statute.
The unrest escalated further after an RTI reply revealed that several key documents related to Prof. Singh’s appointment and academic qualifications were “not available in the office,” raising fresh concerns about procedural lapses at the highest administrative level.
Adding to the tensions, students have rejected the legitimacy of the Board of Management (BoM) meeting held on December 4, alleging procedural violations and deliberate exclusion of internal members. They assert that the meeting stands invalid and any decisions emerging from it are unacceptable.
