Shillong, Aug 21: The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has written to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, urging him to implement a systemic and humane framework for the welfare of street dogs in the state.
In her letter, Chairperson of the Commission Agatha K Sangma expressed appreciation for the Chief Minister’s efforts to strengthen the welfare of street dogs and requested his attention to developing a comprehensive framework that promotes compassion, care, and co-existence.

The Commission’s letter highlighted the importance of designated feeding areas, awareness initiatives, sterilization, and vaccination programs to ensure the well-being of street dogs.
It also references the Indian Central Government’s commitment to addressing stray dog issues through the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
“We believe that Meghalaya can become a model state that embodies the spirit of ahimsa and co-existence,” said Agatha K Sangma.
“We urge the Chief Minister to take concrete steps to implement a humane framework for street dog welfare, promoting a culture of compassion and care in our state.”
