Nagaland on alert over influx fears as Assam plans fresh eviction drive near  border

Must read

Guwahati, July 23: The Nagaland government has ordered “heightened vigilance” against the movement of displaced people into the state as the Assam government prepares for its next eviction drive in an area close to Nagaland.

The Assam government is preparing for its next eviction drive in Uriamghat, in eastern Assam’s Golaghat district, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that thousands of bighas of forest land have been encroached upon for betel nut cultivation. The area borders Nagaland’s Wokha district.

After conducting five eviction drives in June and July, the Assam government has adopted a tougher stance against illegal encroachment of land.

In an order dated July 21, the Nagaland government cited “apprehensions” that people displaced by evictions in Assam may attempt to enter Nagaland, referring to them as “illegal immigrants.”

“Given the eviction drive against the illegal immigrants undertaken by the Government of Assam, there is apprehension/risk that some displaced individuals may attempt to cross into our state. In this regard, all Deputy Commissioners are hereby directed to heighten vigilance and take proactive measures to prevent any potential influx of illegal immigrants within your respective jurisdictions,” the order stated.

The order further stated that this measure is necessary for “maintaining law and order” and for “safeguarding the demographic integrity of our state.”

Authorities in Nagaland are particularly concerned that individuals evicted in Assam—primarily during large-scale eviction operations targeting alleged illegal settlers and encroachers in districts like Uriamghat (Golaghat, bordering Nagaland)—may attempt to cross into Nagaland seeking refuge or new settlement opportunities.
