Guwahati, Sept 16: Nagaland University is now on the global map of quantum research, showcasing how insights from nature can power India’s journey into the next era of computing and technology.
A breakthrough study by Dr. Biplab Pal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Nagaland University, has used fractals—the repeating patterns we see in snowflakes, tree branches, and river networks—to open new possibilities for future quantum technologies.
The research, published in Physica Status Solidi – Rapid Research Letters (Germany), has earned global recognition by being featured on the cover of the journal’s latest issue.
With India already advancing its National Quantum Mission, Dr. Pal’s work underscores how natural patterns can inspire the design of next-generation quantum devices and computing systems.
“Fractals are everywhere in nature—from coastlines to leaves. By bringing them into quantum mechanics, we are opening up new materials and methods for future quantum devices,” Dr. Pal said.
Unlike most quantum research that relies on crystalline materials with perfect internal order, Dr. Pal’s study demonstrates that even non-crystalline, amorphous materials can be harnessed to build the tiny electronic devices of tomorrow.
His findings could pave the way for smarter quantum devices using fractal designs in nanoelectronics, faster and more powerful computing by controlling electrons more efficiently, and advanced quantum memory systems by trapping electrons in fractal patterns.
Congratulating Dr. Pal, Nagaland University Vice Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik said the work shows how nature’s designs can inspire new pathways in quantum systems.
