Guwahati, Sept 16: Five students from Bangladesh studying at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar under the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship have been suspended for violent clashes inside the campus.

NIT Director Dilip Kumar Baidya said the students were also found in possession of narcotic substances, and all five will be sent back to Bangladesh.

The incident took place on September 8, when a group of third-year Bangladeshi students allegedly attacked fellow students from their country.

“We have adequate evidence to establish that they were actively involved in mass violence on campus. They have been suspended for two semesters and expelled from the hostel as part of the punishment. Since they are not allowed to attend classes, they will be sent back to their country soon,” Baidya said.

According to eyewitnesses, around 11:30 pm on September 8, the five students went on a rampage—allegedly under the influence of drugs—and attacked their compatriots.

Several injured students were rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Two of them sustained severe head injuries and required intensive care, fellow students said.

The NIT authorities conducted an internal probe, with a senior ICCR officer from the Guwahati zone also visiting the campus before the disciplinary action was taken on September 12.
