National Renewable Energy Day celebrated in Tura

Tura, 25 Aug: A program for the B.Sc. students of Don Bosco College, Tura was organized by the Department of Physics on the occasion of National Renewable Energy Day or Akshay Urja Diwas, which falls on the 20th of August every year. Due to holiday, the program was postponed from 20th August to 24th August.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India has declared the 20th August, the birth day of Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as “National Renewable Energy Day”. An eminent educator from Tura Government College, Shri Reuter Balzack M Sangma was invited as the Resource Person.

The Physics Honours students of Don Bosco College were forefront in the preparation of the programme. The compering was done by Mr. Matgrik Marak, a Fifth Semester Physics honours student.

Mahidhar Rajbonshi, Head of the Department of Physics, welcomed the resource person, dignitaries, faculty members and participating students on behalf of the department. A welcome song was presented by the Physics Honours students led by Ms. Bonchime Marak and Mr. Baxter Marak.

The Principal, Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim in his address emphasised the need for urgently moving towards renewable sources of energy in the light of looming natural calamities due to climate change. He highlighted some of the measures taken by the college to conserve energy and plans to install solar panels in the college.

The resource person was presented with a College Memento as a token of gratitude for his valuable time. Reuter Balzack M Sangma, the resource person, gave a compelling presentation on the various forms of renewable energy that are currently available and those that are at experimental stages. He talked at length on relatively obscure topics like geothermal energy, tidal energy and bioenergy with elaborate arguments for their merits and demerits. The informational presentation was enriching for the students.

The program ended with a vote of thanks from Ms. Dimre Sangma, a Third Semester Physics Honours student.
