Assam gas field hits production milestone

Must read

Guwahati, June 8: At a time when energy security is becoming a strategic priority for India amid global uncertainties, Cairn, Vedanta Oil & Gas has reported its highest-ever gas production from the Hazarigaon field in Assam, underscoring the growing role of the Northeast in the country’s domestic energy landscape.

The company said it recorded a peak gas production of 178,361 standard cubic metres per day during extended well testing (EWT) at the Hazarigaon asset this month. During FY26, the field maintained an average production of about 102,000 standard cubic metres per day, reflecting steady output alongside the peak performance.

The development comes as India seeks to reduce dependence on imported energy and increase domestic production. With an estimated recovery potential of 11.76 billion cubic feet of gas, the Hazarigaon field is emerging as a significant contributor to the country’s energy basket.

Beyond production numbers, the field is already supporting Assam’s transition towards cleaner energy.

Since 2023, gas from Hazarigaon has been supplied through Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) to tea estates, helping them shift away from coal-based fuel. The gas is also powering around 100 CNG buses in Guwahati and is being supplied to Numaligarh Refinery Limited for captive power generation.

Cairn said its operations in the Northeast are aligned with the Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the region, which aims to unlock the area’s energy resources while promoting industrial growth and economic development.

The company also highlighted its role as the first operator in the Northeast to monetise gas production through collaboration with AGCL, helping lay the foundation for a gas-based ecosystem in the region.

As production rises, the Hazarigaon field is increasingly becoming an example of how local energy resources can support industry, cleaner transportation and economic activity while strengthening India’s push for greater energy self-reliance.

Cairn said it continues to operate with zero routine gas flaring and remains focused on responsible resource utilisation as it expands production from the region.
