Shillong, June 8: Meghalaya footballer Sanfida Nongrum has brought pride to the state after being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the SAFF Women’s Championship, following India’s 3-1 victory over defending champions Bangladesh in the final at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa.
Sanfida played a crucial role in India’s triumph, scoring the team’s second goal shortly after the restart in the 46th minute. India had taken the lead through Pyari Xaxa in the 42nd minute, while Lynda Kom Serto added a third goal in the 82nd minute to seal the title.
Bangladesh’s only goal came through Ritu Porna Chakma in first-half stoppage time (45+1).

The Meghalaya striker was one of India’s standout performers throughout the tournament. In addition to scoring in the final, she had also found the net in the semifinal, making significant contributions to India’s successful campaign and ultimately earning the tournament’s highest individual honour.
An emotional moment followed the final whistle as Sanfida embraced senior Indian international Grace Dangmei, who announced her retirement from football after the championship.
India dominated the tournament from start to finish, winning all four of their matches. The team scored 18 goals and conceded just once, while also denying Bangladesh the opportunity to secure a third consecutive SAFF Women’s Championship crown.
