SHILLONG, APR 1: More than 400 runners, from a four-year-old child to a 62-year-old veteran, took part in a marathon and walkathon at the NEIGRIHMS campus on March 31 to promote organ donation, organised by the State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Meghalaya.
The event was flagged off by NEIGRIHMS Director Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta, who urged the public to support the cause. “Society needs to come forward for organ donation pledge to help our country tide over the crises of organ shortage,” he told participants.

Joint Director of Health Services, Government of Meghalaya, highlighted the difficulties faced by patients from the state. “They have to travel to far-off places across India for organ transplantation facilities,” he said, noting the financial and emotional burden on families.
The Medical Superintendent and Dean of NEIGRIHMS stressed the need to start transplant services at the institute itself, pointing to the gap in specialised care within Meghalaya.
Two kidney donors shared personal experiences, encouraging others to consider donation. Winners of the marathon’s various categories were felicitated with prizes at the end of the program. Prof R Hajong, Nodal Officer of SOTTO, delivered the vote of thanks.
