Imphal, Nov 4: The vibrant festival of Ningol Chakkouba, traditionally celebrated by Manipur’s Meitei community, brought joy and togetherness to families across the country on Sunday. Once largely observed by the Meitei, the festival has, in recent years, become a celebration for multiple communities, showcasing unity and cultural harmony.
Observed on the second day of Hiyangei, the lunar month in the Meitei calendar, Ningol Chakkouba is a cherished occasion where married daughters return to their maternal homes for a grand feast and reunion. It’s customary for the sons of the family to extend a formal invitation to their sisters a week prior, deepening the bonds of family.
This year, the festival reached beyond Manipur to areas across the northeastern states and other parts of India where Manipuri communities reside, marking a joyous celebration that was missed last year due to ethnic tensions in Manipur.
In a heartfelt post on X, the Chief Minister of Manipur shared his greetings, saying, “On the joyous occasion of Ningol Chakkouba, I extend my warmest wishes to all the beloved daughters and sisters of Manipur. This beautiful festival is a reminder of the deep-rooted love and respect we hold for family bonds, especially the cherished place of our daughters. May the love and warmth of family continue to strengthen the spirit of our communities.”
With families gathering to honor this tradition, Ningol Chakkouba continues to exemplify the values of love, unity, and cultural pride across generations.
