NPP confident of Gambegre bye-poll win, cites trend favoring ruling party

Must read

Shillong, Nov 3: The National People’s Party (NPP) expressed optimism about winning the Gambegre bye-poll, citing a trend in which ruling parties often secure victories in bye-elections. NPP leader and Cabinet Minister A.T. Mondal emphasized the distinction between general elections and bye-elections, stating that the latter tend to favor the incumbent government.

“The trend shows that we are winning,” said Mondal. “There is a difference between general elections and bye-elections. In general elections, everyone is uncertain about who will form the next government. When people vote, they think about which party will come to power and consider who to support accordingly,” he explained.

He further pointed out that in bye-elections, the ruling party often has an advantage. “In recent bye-elections, we have seen that the party in power usually wins because people want development,” he noted adding “It’s not a matter of guesswork about who will form the government; it’s already in place, and people vote based on that.”

However, the Minister acknowledged that victory is not guaranteed and emphasized the need for sustained outreach. “I’m not saying it’s a foregone conclusion that we’ll win. We still have to work hard, engage with the people, and convince them that we can deliver better service. Our candidate is very proactive and understands the ground realities,” he said.

On whether the Trinamool Congress (TMC) poses a strong challenge in Gambegre, Mondal responded, “That needs to be assessed. Our focus is on our candidate and her win.”

The NPP has fielded Dr (Mrs) Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, wife of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, while the TMC candidate has fielded Sadhiarani M. Sangma, wife of former minister Zenith Sangma and the sitting MDC from Dengnakpara. Sadhiarani previously contested the 2023 Assembly election from Gambegre, where she was narrowly defeated by Saleng A Sangma by a margin of 2,871 votes.

The Congress has fielded Jingjang M. Marak, a close aide of former Gambegre MLA Saleng A. Sangma. Meanwhile, BJP’s candidate is Tura MDC and State BJP’s Vice President Bernard N. Marak, along with several independent candidates in the race.

The polling is scheduled for November 13 and counting will be held on November 23.
