No arrests in the East Jaintia hills murder case

Shillong, July 07: The state police is yet to make any arrests in the brutal murder of four individuals in East Jaintia Hills District.

District Additional SP Baniateilang Diengngan confirmed that two of the deceased have been identified by their families: Ravi Rai (23) of Patha Elam, Nepal, and Nasar Kyndait (33) of Dkhiah East Pohshnong, East Jaintia Hills District.

A criminal case has been registered with the Khliehriat police station. “The investigation remains active and ongoing,” added Jyrwa.

On July 6, four individuals were found brutally murdered, with their heads severed, in the remote village of Umpleng. The victims were also found with their hands and feet bound in a forested area on the outskirts of the village.

The police have yet to identify the other two victims. Due to the seriousness of the case, a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to assist the investigating officer for an effective investigation.

Crime scene investigators have been called in from police headquarters. Village elders reported that the victims were found tied together with their heads severed, likely executed using sharp objects. The police are investigating whether the crime occurred at the site or if the bodies were dumped there.

Upon receiving information about the bodies, a Crime Scene Unit from Shillong, the Mobile Forensic Crime Scene Unit, and a Magistrate were requisitioned, and an inquest of the bodies was conducted at the scene. The bodies were later moved to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, for post-mortem examinations.
