Shillong, July 19: Nongpoh legislator Mayralborn Syiem along with Nongpoh MDC Balajied Ranee, on Monday met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to seek creation of a new C&RD Block for Umden.
Umling C&RD Block is one of the oldest blocks in Ri-Bhoi and also the biggest block at present. It has 226 villages with approximately 15,000 households and a population of around 81,000.
The two Congress leaders apprised the Chief Minister, and also C&RD Minister Hamlet Dohling, of the grievances faced by people of Ri-Bhoi District, and Nongpoh Constituency in particular, and the need for the new C&RD to bring governance closer to people.
After the meeting, Syiem said although no assurance was provided but they have full faith that “the present government will listen to our grievances that is to bring governance closer to our people. So we need to create this new C&RD Block by the name of Umden C&RD Block.”
Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur Road
The Congress legislators also urged the government for the need of Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur Road.
Syiem said that they have been raising this issue from the past and it has also been placed in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. It has been proposed through the second phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) which will be funded by the World Bank.
“We apprised the chief minister that it is the need of the hour for the immediate sanction of this road. Once this road will be constructed it will ease the problems of the far-flung villages. Around 126 villages are there… this road will be a great help for them. This road, once fully functional, will protect the land of the state as this road passes through bordering areas of the state with Assam,” stated Syiem.
