Guwahati, May 19: A group of artisans and weavers from the Northeast who helped craft the invitation kits and cultural displays for the Republic Day ‘At Home’ Reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan met President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.

The interaction highlighted the growing national recognition of the Northeast’s indigenous craftsmanship and traditional art forms, with artisans from eight northeastern states showcasing products ranging from Assam handwoven stoles and Nagaland bamboo-banana fibre baskets to Manipur’s famed black pottery and Sikkim’s natural fibre products.

The artisans and weavers had contributed to the ‘At Home’ Reception hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 26 this year, where the artistic and cultural heritage of the Northeast was prominently featured.

During the interaction, the artisans shared their experiences of working on the prestigious national event and thanked Rashtrapati Bhavan for providing them a platform to showcase their traditional skills before national and international dignitaries.

Speaking to artisans and weavers from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, President Murmu said the Northeast possesses immense natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

She stressed the need to support artisans and weavers so their traditional knowledge and craftsmanship can reach wider markets and help them become economically self-reliant.

The President praised the artisans for preserving India’s living cultural heritage and urged them to pass on these traditions to younger generations.

“You are shining examples of the nation’s living heritage,” she told the participants during the interaction.

Following the meeting, the artisans and weavers were given a guided tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan, including the Amrit Udyan.
