Guwahati, July 17: A fresh spell of heavy rain is set to lash the Northeast over the next four days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Red Alert for parts of Arunachal Pradesh as the risk of extremely heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides rises.
The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), Guwahati, said widespread rainfall is expected across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on July 17 and 18. Rainfall is likely to remain fairly widespread on July 19 before gradually weakening, with only scattered showers forecast across most of the region by July 21.

An Orange Alert has been issued for several northeastern states on July 17, while the warning has been upgraded to a Red Alert for Arunachal Pradesh on July 18 due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Weather conditions are expected to improve from July 19, when the alert for the state is likely to be downgraded to Yellow.
Within Arunachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Centre at Itanagar has identified Papum Pare and Kurung Kumey as the worst-affected districts during the current spell.

Papum Pare will remain under a Red Alert from July 17 to 19, with isolated places likely to receive 12-20 cm of rainfall in 24 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Kurung Kumey will be under a Red Alert on July 18 and 19, with 6-11 cm of rain expected at isolated locations along with thunderstorms and lightning.
An Orange Alert has also been issued for Anjaw on July 18 and 19, while heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for Lohit, Pakke Kessang, Lower Subansiri, Tawang, West Kameng, East Kameng and Changlang.

The weather office warned that the prolonged spell could trigger flash floods, landslides, mudslides and overflowing streams, particularly in hilly districts. Waterlogging, uprooting of trees and disruption to road connectivity are also likely, while low-lying areas may experience temporary flooding.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall, stay away from landslide-prone slopes and swollen rivers, and follow advisories issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
