Guwahati, Apr 1: Northeast India is expected to experience above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall in April, raising concerns over heat stress and water availability, according to the latest outlook by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD in its “Seasonal outlook for hot weather season (April to June) 2026 and Monthly Outlook for April 2026 for the Rainfall and Temperature” said that while many parts of India may see normal or cooler temperatures, east and Northeast India will be hotter than usual during April–June.
“During the 2026 hot weather season (April–June), maximum temperatures are likely to be normal to below normal over many parts of the country except most parts of east and northeast India, as well as eastern parts of central India and adjoining peninsular regions where above-normal maximum temperatures are expected”
“The rainfall during April 2026, averaged over the country as a whole, is most likely to be above normal (>112% of LPA). Normal to above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of the country except Northeast India. Below-normal rainfall is expected over many parts
of northeastern India”

The outlook further indicates a warmer-than-usual night temperature trend, which can worsen discomfort and health risks during the summer months.
Although widespread heatwaves are not specifically forecast for the Northeast, the IMD warned that rising temperatures could still impact public health, agriculture, and water resources, especially for vulnerable groups.
The report also flags potential stress on crops such as rice, pulses, and vegetables due to heat and faster soil moisture loss in eastern and northeastern regions.
Authorities have been advised to ensure preparedness, including drinking water supply, health monitoring, and awareness measures, as the region heads into a hotter and relatively drier start to summer.
