Notorious doctor gets public thrashing for attempted extortion in Garo Hills

Must read

Tura, March 14: In a shocking incident, Dr Jimmy Carter Sangma, a notorious figure linked to the militant group GNLA, met his match when he tried to extort money from meat vendors near Rongram Bridge on Tuesday.

At around 7 PM, he and his gang of goons approached the vendors and demanded money. When the vendors objected, Dr Jimmy took out a dao and threatened to cut people up. However, the public wasn’t going to stand for it. In a flash, they pounced on Dr Jimmy and his three friends, who were with him. A massive scuffle broke out as hundreds of people fought back against the gang of extortionists. While the extortionist doctor was beaten black and blue, his three cronies managed to flee the scene with considerable injuries.

But the public’s anger didn’t end there. They then turned their fury towards Dr Jimmy’s mahindra bolero pik up mini truck and destroyed it. In a fit of rage, they lifted the vehicle and hurled it into the nearby Ganol River, sending it plunging to its watery demise.

Fortunately for Dr Jimmy, he saved by the skin of his teeth after police from nearby Rongram market arrived on the scene and rescued him. He was taken to the Rongram police station but even there the public surrounded the station demanding they hand him over for public justice.

Additional forces were rushed to the scene and the doctor was arrested and taken for medical treatment.

Formal FIR filed
Meanwhile, a FIR has been filed by Akgrimran Marak and Silman Sangma, who reported the incident of attempted extortion and violence. According to the FIR filed on March 14, 2023, at around 3 pm, a person named Niana from Chibra Agal came to collect money forcibly from Rupali D Sangma, who runs a vegetable shop near the NH road. Niana claimed that he was sent by Dr. Jimmy Carter N. Sangma.

When the relatives and residents rushed to the spot to inquire about the matter, they had a heated argument with Dr. Jimmy Carter N. Sangma. The argument turned violent when Dr. Jimmy took a machete from the chicken butcher shop and started to attack the public, in the process injuring Akgrimran Marak and Silman Sangma of Alargre.

Based on this FIR, a case (Tura PS case No 25(03)2023) has been registered under the Indian Penal Code sections 384 (extortion), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 307 (attempt to murder), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) against Dr. Jimmy . The investigation officer in charge of the case is SI Mukesh Marak.

Mentionably, this isn’t the first time Dr Jimmy has been in trouble with the law. He was earlier arrested for links to GNLA and was even tagged as the Defence Secretary of the militant group when it was at the height of its power in Garo Hills. But this time, he may have finally met his match. The case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing, with the police determined to bring the culprits to justice.
