KSU seeks clarification from Anti-Infiltration Check Gate officials over unauthorized transit of migrants

Nongpoh, March 14: The leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills district unit, met with officers in-charge of the Anti-Infiltration Check Gate at Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi on Tuesday to seek clarification on the unauthorized transit of migrants without authorized documents or papers into the State of Meghalaya.

Lester Nongbet, the organizing secretary of the KSU North Khasi Unit, informed that the meeting with the officer of the Anti-Infiltration Check Gate was because of allegations that officers were accepting bribes to allow migrants with no proper documentation to pass through the gates. He also informed that the KSU has apprehended several illegal migrants in the past few days.

Nongbet added that despite the implementation of the Workman Act, 2011, and the Meghalaya Residential Safety and Security Act, 2016, there is still a huge influx of illegal migrants.

“If the government cannot handle this influx issue on their own, we will work with blood and sweat for our homeland, the Hynniewtrep,” Nongbet said.

He further stated that people possessing any of the following documents – EPIC, Aadhar, or Pan card – are allowed to pass. However, the Meghalaya Inter-State Migrant Workmen Rule 2011 is not being properly implemented.
