NPP confident for GHADC Polls as Garo Hills development gains public support: Marcuise

Shillong, Aug 4: NPP leader and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak has expressed confidence that National People’s Party (NPP) is gaining people’s support ahead of the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), scheduled to be held next year because of its performance and development that is taking place in Garo Hills region.

Speaking about the party’s preparation, Marak stated that the party has made significant progress in Garo Hills under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma.

“Under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma much have been done in Garo Hills apart from the rest of the state. Therefore people are for the NPP party as they have seen the kind of activities that is happening in Garo Hills. So people are for the NPP,” he told reporters on Monday.

Emphasizing the importance of the candidate selection process, the NPP leader said that the party will carefully select candidates for the MDC elections, ensuring that they are trustworthy and capable of representing the party’s values.

He assured that the party will work hard to convince people that the NPP is the right choice for the GHADC.

“There are so many issues coming up in the district council but in the party meeting I have already discuss that issue. If we need to strengthen the district council in Garo Hills we have to work very hard and we have to go to the people convince them that this is the party where you can put your trust. We will try our level best to strengthen the GHADC,” Marak stated.

Asked if the ongoing GHADC crisis will not affect the party in the election, the NPP state working president acknowledged that the party will face challenges in the elections, particularly due to legacy issues created by previous executive committees.

However, he expressed confidence that the party will be able to address these issues and work towards strengthening the GHADC.

“Therefore, people understand the issue and we will be talking to the people in this regard,” Marak added.

Marak informed that the party will shortly constitute an election committee, which will oversee the selection of candidates for the MDC elections.

He said that the party has already started preparing for the elections, with regional committee meetings and district-level meetings being held to identify potential candidates.

The NPP has constituted a regional committee comprising district presidents, secretaries, and frontal wing presidents and secretaries.

The committee will play a crucial role in guiding the party’s election strategy and candidate selection process.

The working president informed that the party has already started identifying potential candidates and announced that one such candidate, Sengbath R Marak, being unanimously supported by the Williamnagar constituency.

“I had a meeting of my own Williamnagar constituency wherein we have unanimously supported the nomination made by the block president R Sangma, who has proposed Sengbath R Marak’s name. Everyone has accepted that and we will be nominating his name to the party high command for giving him party ticket to contest from Williamnagar constituency,” he said while stating that this initiative was to push other constituencies to take positive steps to decide the party candidates at the earliest.
