NPP confident of strong show in Assam polls, pushes ‘One NE’ platform: James K Sangma

SHILLONG, APR 14: National People’s Party (NPP) leader James K Sangma on Tuesday expressed confidence in his party’s performance in the Assam elections, while reiterating the push for a unified ‘One North East’ political platform.

Speaking on the Assam campaign, Sangma said it was “extremely satisfying” despite “certain incidence of violence, which have been very unfortunate especially in Haflong.”“I think overall, if you look at the way the response has been, we are very confident that the NPP will be performing extremely well in all the three seats that we have been contesting,” he said.

On the party’s ‘One NE’ initiative, Sangma said the concept is already taking shape.

“As we speak One North East is taking shape. Now if you look at Daniel Lalthangsa, he had his own political party and he has come with us. That is all part of a larger narrative of the one NE campaign that we have, that all of us must come together, work together and it needs to have one political platform or a single voice, which will be able to represent the entire north east region. In unity will lie our strength, that is what we have been proposed,” he said.

He pointed to recent political movements as evidence of the initiative’s momentum. “Mr Kikon joining who is a very senior leader from Nagaland, Daniel joining, these are all part and parcel of that movement,” Sangma added.

On the naming of the platform, the NPP leader said ideology matters more than nomenclature. “The name is not as important as the ideology or the thought behind it is,” he said.

“It doesn’t have to be in that way wherein we all sit down and we start discussing about nity gritty. I think it’s about action and that action has started as we speak, and I think that’s how things are moving extremely fast.”

Sangma noted that elections had temporarily slowed discussions on the ‘One NE’ front but expressed confidence in its growth.

“We have had elections in the middle, so we have had to put a stop to looking at how we can take one NE further. But having said that, I’m very confident that as we go forward, you will see many other prominent and very influential political leaders of the north east wanting to come under this common umbrella,” he said.
