Dibrugarh, Feb 20: Security forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district have claimed to have foiled a terror plot with the arrest of an NSCN-IM cadre during a joint operation on Friday.
The operation was carried out at Tissing, near Zedua village under Longding police station, by a joint team of the Assam Rifles, Special Task Force (STF), and Longding Police.
An active cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) (NSCN-IM), identified as SS Captain Ponglem Wangpan (35), son of Lt. Ajong Wangpan and a resident of Longsom village in Longding district, was apprehended during the operation.
Security personnel recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from his possession, including one 5.56 mm INSAS rifle, one 9 mm pistol, one INSAS magazine, one pistol magazine, 18 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and two rounds of 9 mm ammunition.
According to officials, Wangpan was leading a team of four members who had allegedly entered Longding with the intention of carrying out a kidnapping or targeted killing. Swift action by the joint security forces prevented what authorities described as a potential terror incident.
An FIR has been registered at Longding Police Station (Case No. 08/26) under Sections 25(1A) and 27 of the Arms Act, read with Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Security forces have launched combing and search operations in nearby areas to trace the remaining members of the group.
